May
14th 2003 was the date that Manhunt was first
officially announced for PlayStation 2. It was
at E3 2003 that Rockstar North told the world
that Manhunt was a game that explores the depths
of human depravity in a vicious, sadistic tale
of urban horror and that details surrounding
the game remain shrouded in secrecy. It wasn't
until May, 29th 2003 that it was heard of again
when Rockstar North put up the official website
for the game, it included one pop up image and
a distorted voice telling visitors to visit
another website which was the valient-ent.biz
website which is now renamed to valient-ent.tv.
The link had a set of videos to view from a
locked off camera set in the distance watching
executions take place. The website included
a message board complete with fake postings
of curious people asking about snuff movies
and objects.
On August 1st
2003 Rockstar released a set of screenshots
for Manhunt these were from a version they were
working on at the time the screenshots showed
someone with different types of weapons from
hand held weapons like a meat cleaver, machete
and the metal baseball bat to a shotgun. The
screenshots also showed off some of the gangs
like the Wardogs, Hoods and the Skinz these
shots can be found in the image gallery of the
site.
September 2nd
2004 was the next time Rockstar North released
some more screenshots this time on the official
website, also announced was the fact that the
games release date was pushed back from late
October 2003 to mid-November 2003. 20 days later
and another bunch of screenshots came out from
the game in motion, more of the games story
was also explained telling people that the main
character was Cash and that he started the game
without any weapons.
September 22,
2003 was also when the Cash was shown redesigned
his cloths were change and his appearance was
slightly altered again screenshots in the gallery.
November, 5th
2003 information was released stating that the
game was compatible with a recently released
USB headset to highlight the importance of sound
in the game. The Directors voice would only
be heard with the headset and the games environmental
sounds would be heard through your TV or speakers.
Any noise voiced through the headsets microphone
would be heard in game by the hunters that are
after Cash. 5 new screenshots were released
on November 13th 2003 for the next week after
this videos were released in the build up to
the games released date. On the 22nd the game
came out in North America.
Now
almost 3 year on since the game was officially
announced, everyone is anticipating the much
hoped for sequel.

"They
just killed Cash. Now, they want
to kill him again."
America is full of run down, broken
rust-belt towns where nobody cares
and anything goes. In Carcer City,
nothing matters anymore and all
that's left are cheap thrills.
The ultimate rush is the power
to grant life and take it away,
for sport. This time James Earl
Cash, you are the sport. They
gave you your life back. Now,
they are going to hunt you down.
You awake to the sound of your
own panicked breath. You must
run, hide and fight to survive.
If you can stay alive long enough,
you may find out who did this
to you.
This is a brutal blood sport.
